Thrive! Leadership Programme

A practical, one day, ‘workshop style’ programme for SLTs and/or governing boards of MATs and individual schools.

We believe that recruiting and retaining talented staff is currently the most important strategy that school leaders can take for improving children’s outcomes – not least in a very challenging and competitive context for recruitment. The Thrive! Leadership Programme (by Forum Education) supports, informs and inspires senior leadership teams to plan and prepare for their organisations to become ‘employers of choice’. Here’s why becoming an ’employer of choice’ matters so much….

“The quality of an education system cannot exceed the quality of its teachers”
McKinsey & Co. 2007

“Schools can only be as good as the people who work in them.”
Ofsted 2015

“Getting the best teachers into the profession is in itself a key school improvement activity”
John Stephens, National College for Teaching and Leadership

The success of our schools and our children and young people depends – above anything else – on the quality of teachers, leaders and support staff. There is no more impactful leadership strategy than recruiting and retaining the very best staff to serve children.

Yet schools are struggling to recruit and retain staff. Almost 1/3 of those who joined the profession in 2010 have now left. The perception of the education profession has been hampered through its reputation for heavy workload, high accountability and lagging pay. Many schools are spending enormous amounts of money on adverts and recruitment agencies – with little success or wider strategy.

However, the best schools and school leaders are being proactive and creating and shaping organisations with a strong reputation for being places where adults thrive – to the benefit of children. This is the key to their success. Leaders must be more strategic than ever before in shaping a culture that attracts, inspires, motivates, nurtures and supports those people who are both teachers and role models to our children. In doing so they also work hard to further promote their reputation as an ’employers of choice’.

Our training days for Senior Leadership Teams are led by Michael Pain, former Head of Policy and Public Affairs at the National College for Teaching and Leadership and now a trusted adviser to a number of multi-academy trusts and teaching schools. Michael has led national training for the National College for Teaching and Leadership, for MATs and for individual schools on ‘becoming an employer of choice’ and general organisational development. He has also written extensively on the issue.

The training sessions include:

  • An overview of the current barriers to effective recruitment and retention and how to respond to them;
  • Reflections on the role of organisational values and vision in attracting and retaining talented employees;
  • Understanding  ‘millenials’ expectations of their workplaces, employers and careers;
  • Reflecting on core characteristics and approaches of employers of choice. How do these apply to the leadership and organisational development of schools?
  • Self-audit tools to enable participants to carefully consider their schools’ strengths and weaknesses as an employer;
  • Action planning exercises for improved recruitment, retention and staff engagement;
  • Hints and tips for improved marketing and communications (without incurring huge expense for adverts and recruitment agencies!)
  • Sharing of a wide range of resources and guidance to support leaders in taking their strategies forward.
