The success of our schools and our children and young people depends – above anything else – on the quality of teachers, leaders and support staff. There is no more impactful leadership strategy than recruiting and retaining the very best staff to serve children.
Yet schools are struggling to recruit and retain staff. Almost 1/3 of those who joined the profession in 2010 have now left. The perception of the education profession has been hampered through its reputation for heavy workload, high accountability and lagging pay. Many schools are spending enormous amounts of money on adverts and recruitment agencies – with little success or wider strategy.
However, the best schools and school leaders are being proactive and creating and shaping organisations with a strong reputation for being places where adults thrive – to the benefit of children. This is the key to their success. Leaders must be more strategic than ever before in shaping a culture that attracts, inspires, motivates, nurtures and supports those people who are both teachers and role models to our children. In doing so they also work hard to further promote their reputation as an ’employers of choice’.
Our training days for Senior Leadership Teams are led by Michael Pain, former Head of Policy and Public Affairs at the National College for Teaching and Leadership and now a trusted adviser to a number of multi-academy trusts and teaching schools. Michael has led national training for the National College for Teaching and Leadership, for MATs and for individual schools on ‘becoming an employer of choice’ and general organisational development.
